Europatreppe 4000

Around 4,000 steps, 700 m of ascent, gradients of up to 86 per cent: Europe's longest straight staircase from Partenen to Trominier – with the Vermuntbahn back down.

The Europatreppe 4000 is the classic among the Montafon's verticals: from the valley station of the Vermuntbahn in Partenen (1,030 m) a dead-straight staircase climbs 700 m in 1.7 km up to Trominier (1,711 m) – Europe's longest straight staircase, with gradients of up to 86 per cent. The steps were built in the 1920s during construction of the Vermunt power station as a maintenance stair beside the inclined lift that Illwerke used to haul material up for the Silvretta reservoirs; today the Vermuntbahn cabin glides directly overhead. Counted, there are 3,609 steps, signed as “4000”, and each one differs in height and depth – which tests coordination more than raw strength. Ski racers train here, and the record at the Montafon stair cup stands at a little over 20 minutes; the one hour in our fact box is a guide value for walkers with rests on the benches.

The staircase is open from 1 June to 31 October. At the top you take the Vermuntbahn down (summer 2026: 20 June to 4 October, last descent 17:00, included in the Freizeit-WildPass) or walk back to Partenen via Bofa; from Trominier the tunnel bus also runs to the Bielerhöhe, since the Silvretta High Alpine Road is closed on the Vorarlberg side until around 2030. Partenen is 11 minutes from our house, and bus 650 stops in the village.
