Montafoner Berglauf – race course

Short, steep and stony: the Montafoner Berglauf is a classic vertical race that the Schiclub Silvretta Partenen, supported by Montafon Tourismus, holds every autumn (in 2026 on Sunday 20 September, start 11 am at the Vermunt cable car). The course starts at the valley station of the Tafamunt cable car (1,033 m), passes through the hamlet of Motta and then climbs a narrow forest path with tight switchbacks through the Zerresner forest; for the last few hundred metres you run across the open Maisäß pastures of Tafamunt to the Alpstöbli mountain inn. According to the track it is 2.3 km and 500 m of ascent; as a hike we reckon on a guideline of about 40 minutes; running it is considerably quicker.

Outside the race the path makes an ideal interval or vertical session: run up, stop for refreshments at the Alpstöbli and float back down to Partenen on the Tafamunt cable car (Tafamunt middle station at 1,530 m, summer operation in 2026 from 4 June to 18 October). The Tafamunt cable car is actually a works lift of illwerke vkw and runs on demand, usually in the morning and afternoon with a lunch break. From our house bus 650 takes you to the Partenen terminus in about 20 minutes; by car it is 8 km.
