Ganeu Maisäß Loop

The Ganeu Maisäß Loop is one of the most demanding routes in the Gaschurn-Partenen running network: 11.9 km, 642 m of ascent, from the valley floor at 941 m up to 1,562 m. It starts at the Mountain Beach leisure park; the cycle path takes you to the Versettla Bahn valley station and then it climbs steeply via Pfanges into the Ganeu Maisäß. The Maisäß hamlets are the middle tier of the Montafon's three-level farming system – cattle graze here in spring and autumn before moving to the high alps or returning to the valley – and Ganeu has the oldest double barn in the Montafon, dating from 1552. The loop continues via the Schwizerhüsli to the Lifinar Maisäß, the high point with views over Gaschurn to the Rätikon, and via the Gundalatscherberg back to the Versettla Bahn and the lake. Forest and alp tracks plus tarmac in the valley; the 2 hours 24 minutes is a guide value for brisk walking.

The loop is practically on our doorstep: Mountain Beach is 6 minutes by car or about 10 minutes on bus 650. Early in the morning the climb is shaded; after the run a dip in the natural swimming lakes at Mountain Beach is well earned (2026 season: 22 May to 31 August). To save the climb, ride the Versettla Bahn to the middle station and run only the high-level section.

💡 Tips & refreshments

Steep forest and meadow paths – trail shoes and at least a litre of water, as there is no refreshment stop on the way. The Maisäß hamlets are lived in and farmed: close gates, give grazing cattle space, and walkers have priority.

🚌 Getting there by public transport

Landbus 650, stop Gaschurn Versettla cable car (approx. 10 min from St. Gallenkirch); ski bus in winter.
