The Gauenstein Trail is a varied loop in the Schruns-Tschagguns running network: 8.3 km, 326 m of ascent, between 645 and 817 m. From Aktivpark Montafon you follow the Ill promenade to Tschagguns, pass through the hamlets of Nira and Krista to Kaltenbrunnen station on the Montafonerbahn railway and then climb the Gauserwaldweg up to the Gauenstein. On this rocky spur above Schruns stands the Gauenstein monastery: hermits lived here from the early 18th century, in 1843 Fidel and Anna-Maria Tschol founded the monastery, home to Capuchin friars from 1844 to 2021; since 2022 the Sisters of St Clare live there. Monastery, church and garden are listed monuments, and the view over Schruns is the finest of the loop. The Broxweg takes you down into the centre of Schruns and back to the Aktivpark. The surface alternates between promenade, forest and meadow paths and village streets; the 2 hours in our fact box is a guide value for walkers – in the running network the route is also listed as a walking loop under the name “Gauenstein-Walk”.

The loop can be run year-round in almost any weather and suits the morning while the forest section is still cool. Water from the fountains in Schruns and Tschagguns. From our house: 11 minutes by car, bus 650/651 to Tschagguns Zelfen or the Montafonerbahn to Tschagguns; with the train you can also start the loop at Kaltenbrunnen.
