Litz Promenade, Ill Path and Lakes Loop
The flat valley loop from Schruns: 8.3 km from the station along the Litz promenade and Ill path to Vandans, the Rodund basins and back – only 76 m of ascent.
This loop is the run for the valley floor: 8.3 km, 76 m of ascent, between 631 and 688 m, easy. From Schruns station it follows the Litz promenade – past the monument to Johann Josef Batlogg (1751–1800), the Landammann who organised the Montafon's defence against French troops in 1796 and 1799 – to where the Litz joins the Ill, then the Ill path downstream to Vandans. Past Vandans station and the Rätikonbad pool you reach the Rodund balancing basins, the “lakes” of the loop: two Illwerke storage basins in which the Rätikon is mirrored. Via Kaltenbrunnen station, the Ill path and the Litz promenade you return to Schruns. Underfoot: promenade, tarmac cycle path and gravel; the 1 hour 20 minutes in our fact box is a guide value for strollers, runners should allow about 45 minutes.
The practical bit: the Montafonerbahn railway stops in Schruns, Kaltenbrunnen and Vandans, so the loop can be started or shortened at any of these points, and in summer the open-air pool in Vandans awaits. From our house in St. Gallenkirch it is 13 minutes by car or about 15 minutes on bus 650 to Schruns; in the morning the valley floor is pleasantly cool, in the evening the promenade lies in shade.
