This is how the Montafon Arlberg Marathon ran from its first edition in 2003 until 2018: start at the fire station in Silbertal (about 830 m), a loop via Hofstatt and the Kapellbahn through the village, then up the valley past the Teufelsbach waterfall to the Fellimännle alpine inn and through the Gafluna valley via the Untere Gafluna Alpe and the Fresch Alpe steadily up to the Winterjöchle, at 1,955 m the highest point. Beyond the provincial border comes the long descent through the Verwall: past the Langsee and over Schönverwall to the Verwallsee, through the Sattelwald and via Moosbach into the Dorfstraße of St. Anton am Arlberg. 41.9 km, 1,500 m of climbing and 1,062 m of descent – forest and alp tracks in the Silbertal, a technical section of rock, grass and wet ground at the pass, broad natural paths in the Verwall valley. The 8 hours in our fact box is a guide value for hikers; the route also works as a two-day tour with a night in the Verwall.

Since 2019 the race has been run in the opposite direction, and today the finish atmosphere is in Silbertal. If you run the classic direction privately, take the train from St. Anton through the Arlberg tunnel to Bludenz and the Montafonerbahn back into the valley. Silbertal is 21 minutes by car from our house or about 35 minutes on buses 650 and 680 via Schruns; water and refreshments are available at the Fellimännle alpine inn and in the Verwall at the Konstanzer Hütte.
